GENERAL PROBLEMS
----------------
The following lists some of the problems that you may experience and a solution or work around has been provided.
Q: I keep getting a setup error
A: It is essential to close all running programs before beginning the set up procedure. Failure to do this can result in problems in setting up a program.
Ensure you also close all programs on the task bar such as virus scanning programs. By closing all programs you ensure a successful set up of your new program.
Q: I can not run the program file?
A: The program was designed in Visual Basic 4.0 16-bit. If you find that an error occurs on execution of the program then you need to install the Visual Basic 4.0 16-bit Runtime files. To Install the Visual Basic 4.0 16-bit Runtime files execute the file "VBR416.EXE" on the CD.
1. Click on to the "Start" button located on the bottom left of your task bar.
2. Select "Run".
3. Type in the following "D:\DRIVERS\VBRUN\VBR416.EXE" (assuming that D is your CD-ROM drive letter - please change if otherwise).
4. Click on to the "Run" or "OK" button and follow the on-screen instruction to complete the installation.
Q: Can not find file "MMSYSTEM.DLL"?
A: The file "MMSYSTEM.DLL" is a multimedia extension for Windows. You can copy this file from the "SYSTEM" folder on the CD to the "WINDOWS\SYSTEM" directory on your hard drive.
1. Click on the "Start" button, then choose "Programs" and start "Windows Explorer"
2. Locate your CD-ROM drive using the left hand side of "Windows Explorer"
3. On the right hand side of "Windows Explorer" double click on the "SYSTEM" folder and you should see the file "MMSYSTEM.DLL". If you see this file then go to step 5
4. If you did not see this file, then click on the "View" menu item and select "Options". Make sure the "Show all files" option is enabled or dotted, if not then left click on to the "Show all files"
5. With your right mouse button, right click on to the file "MMSYSTEM.DLL" and then left click on to "Copy"
6. Locate your "WINDOWS" folder on your hard drive using the left hand side of "Windows Explorer". Look for and double click on to the "SYSTEM" folder
7. Go to the right hand side of "Windows Explorer" and right click on to an empty or white space area. Left click on to the "Paste" option
8. Restart the program.
Q: "Path/File Access Error"
A: This is caused by running the game after copying it from the CD-ROM to your hard drive. Eureka Games must be run from CD-ROM.
DISPLAY PROBLEMS
Q: "Can't Create Auto-Redraw Image"
A: This is caused by expanded memory settings. Windows likes Extended Memory.
If your config.sys file has a line similar to this:
"DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM"
You'll need to change the RAM settings to NOEMS
"DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS"
Q: What's a Small Font Driver, and why do I need one?
A: Small font drivers display a screen resolution of 96 DPI (dots per inch). This is the standard for PCs.
Large Font drivers were created by video companies to allow people to use higher resolutions, while still being able to read text.
This is actually a hoax, since the screen DPI is changed, in order to force fonts to appear larger, thus decreasing the size of bitmapped images (which are controlled by screen DPI). Some video card manufacturers actually just load the next lower resolution video driver, fooling the user into thinking they are running a higher resolution.
The Eureka Games was created using standard 96 DPI resolution (640x480). When used on a system with large fonts, the artwork displayed appears larger than its actually size, causing display problems.
Under Windows 95 & 98, you can change the size of screen fonts, without changing the screen DPI by:
1. Click on to the "Start" button.
2. Select "Settings" and then "Control Panel".
3. Find and double click on to the "Display" icon.
4. Click on to the "Setting" tab.
5. Under the "Font Size" section click on to the black arrow pointing down and then select "Small Font".
6. Finally click on to the "OK" button.
Q: The graphics are blacked out, or look funny.
A: Many Video Cards claim to be 100% Windows Compatible, when in fact they are not.
If parts of the game are blacked out, your card does not properly support the BitBlt drawing function, which is part of the Windows Operating System.
Try a different resolution, or different color depth. You may find one that works. Contact your video card manufacturer or use the internet and obtain the latest drivers for your card, that support certain Windows functions (ie: StretchBlt. BitBlt), at some resolutions or color depths.
The following video card manufacturers often have problems with non-compatible drivers.
Trident, Cirrus Logic, STB Inc.
SOUND PROBLEMS
Q: "Cannot Open Wave File" or "Cannot Open Midi File"
A: Eureka Games was designed to operate with Sound Blaster Compatible Cards utilising Windows Standard MCI commands. Cards that are not Soundblaster Compatible may not work with this program. These cards usually have manual volume Control Switch.
